If you’ve ever stood in the middle of a rental apartment, staring into the void of a wall of Millennial beige, and thought I cannot live like this for another year, hi there, welcome, pull up a chair! I have been that person. Many times.
The thing nobody tells you about renting is that “you can’t put holes in the walls” doesn’t have to mean “you have to live in a space that looks like a hotel that gave up.” There is a whole world of products designed specifically for people like us: people who want a home that feels like theirs without forfeiting their security deposit in the process.
I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time testing, researching, and honestly just impulse-buying things that promised to make my rental feel more like a home. Here’s what actually made the cut.
For Bare Walls: Command XL Picture Hanging Strips
Let’s start with the obvious one, because, honestly, if you don’t have these, you’re missing out. Command XL Picture Hanging Strips are the reason I have a gallery wall in my rental right now, and they are the reason my landlord will have no idea I had a gallery wall when I move out.
The XL strips hold up to 20 lbs per pair — which means actual framed art, not just lightweight posters. They click together to lock in place, keep everything level, and when you’re ready to take them down, you just stretch the little tab and they peel clean off the wall. No residue, no paint damage, no patching required.
Pro tip: clean the wall with rubbing alcohol before you apply them and wait the full recommended time before hanging. I know, I know, the impulse to hang things right away and start curating your wall is strong. But trust me, it’s worth it. Once they’re secure, you can even add strips to more than one picture frame or decor element and change them out as you like to keep things feeling fresh

For Sad Walls: NuWallpaper Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
Okay, hear me out. I know “wallpaper” sounds like a commitment and possibly a misguided attempt at mental health care for depressed women (iykyk) but peel-and-stick wallpaper is genuinely one of the best things to happen to renters in years. NuWallpaper specifically has been my go-to because it repositions without losing its stick — so if you mess up the alignment (and you will, the first time, and that’s okay) you can just peel it back and try again.
I used it to do a single accent wall in my previous rental and it completely transformed the room. People who visited genuinely thought I painted or did some kind of renovation. I did not. I spent an afternoon with a roll of wallpaper and a scraper to smooth out the bubbles.
With designs ranging from subtle textures to bold botanicals, there’s genuinely something for every style. And because it’s fully removable, the “risk” is almost zero. Worst case scenario, you peel it off and try a different pattern. Best case, your apartment looks like it belongs on Pinterest.
As a note, if you are worried about the integrity of the paint on your walls (which I’d bet money is either off-white, gray, or the aforementioned beige) after being treated to the Landlord Special, a single layer of painter’s tape over your surface lowers the risk even more! All paint jobs are not created equal, and if it looks like your walls have been painted over and over, this hack may be just what you’ve been looking for.

For Wasted Door Space: Over-the-Door Organizers
This one feels almost too simple, but the back of a door is some of the most overlooked real estate in any space. No drilling, no screws, no damage, just hang it over the door and instantly gain storage you didn’t have before.
For a sleeker look: Homelux Theory 6-Tier Over-the-Door Organizer
I have not one, but two of these in my current home. It holds up to 50 lbs, which is genuinely impressive for something that just hangs there, and it has adhesive pads to keep it from bouncing around every time you open the door. I use mine in the bathroom for toiletries and in our laundry room for cleaning products. It’s currently rated 4.7 stars, and I completely understand why.

For Tired Countertops and Cabinets: Peel-and-Stick Contact Paper
Ugh, rental kitchens. They really said function over form and never looked back. If your countertops or cabinet shelves are giving “1989 called and it wants its laminate back,” this contact paper is your best friend.
VEELIKE Peel-and-Stick Contact Paper comes in a wood plank pattern that looks decently realistic. Not “obviously a sticker” realistic, but “wait, did you renovate your kitchen?” realistic. It’s waterproof, easy to cut to size, and fully removable without leaving residue. I’ve used it on shelves, the inside of cabinets, and even the side of a bookcase that was looking a little rough.
At around $15 a roll, it’s also one of the lowest-risk upgrades on this entire list. If you hate it, you peel it off and you’re out fifteen bucks. If you love it, your rental kitchen suddenly has a personality.

For Dark Kitchens: Under-Cabinet LED Lights
This one is a little bit of a cheat because it’s less “home improvement” and more “home glow-up,” but I’m including it anyway because it made such a difference I cannot in good conscience leave it off the list.
Under-cabinet LED lights — specifically the rechargeable, motion-sensor kind — stick magnetically to the underside of your cabinets and automatically turn on when you walk into the kitchen. No wiring. No drilling. No electrician. Just peel, stick, and suddenly your kitchen prep area is properly lit for the first time in your entire tenancy.
Look for options with a USB-C charging port and a warm light setting — the cool white ones can feel a little clinical. A full charge lasts up to 30 days, so you’re not constantly hunting for batteries either. 4.5 stars across the board and a genuinely underrated rental upgrade.

- 4 Lighting Modes: The motion sensor lights support four modes to meet the needs of different occasions: OFF Mode, Night …
The Honest Bottom Line
None of these things require a drill, a landlord’s permission, or a crisis of conscience about your security deposit. They’re all removable, all renter-friendly, and all genuinely worth the investment if you’re tired of living in a space that doesn’t feel like yours.
Start with the Command strips and one roll of contact paper. Fifteen minutes and maybe thirty dollars later, your apartment will already feel different. I promise.
