I’ve been a proud puppydog owner for four years now, and there have been many lessons learned in that time! Lazlo is my first dog, so we’ve had our ups and downs, but over the years I’ve been able to narrow down which products have both stood the test of time and met my dog’s (admittedly high) standards. A Drool-Proof Food Bowl Mat

Lazlo’s a bulldog mix, so he’s a little messy with his water slurping. At first, we tried a Silicone Mat under his water bowl, but we quickly realized this resulted in a puddle that trailed on to the floor. Then I found this Absorbent Dog Mat and everything changed! Not only is it a super cute pop of color in our kitchen (I went with the green, but multiple colors and shapes are available!) it really does keep its promise to keep the floors clean. Drips, slobbers, and even spills are quickly absorbed, and then it’s back to it’s usual color. It’s also super easy to clean if any wet food is dribbled onto it–one damp washcloth later and it was back to looking brand-new.

A Safe Space to Rest

Crates are great to know that your dog is contained in a safe space at night or while you’re away from home, but also to give your dog a comfy den to rest in if they’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Both Lazlo and I have loved this Two-Door, Foldable Crate for years now! It’s super easy to set up, and just as easy to collapse for storage or travel. My favorite feature over the years has been the two-door system, with a door on both the short and long sides, so that we can set it up differently depending on the space it’s in. Lazlo isn’t an escape artist by any means, but even his puppy-tantrums during crate our training days never opened either door. The slide-out bottom makes it super easy to clean, and it only takes a blanket and a soft crate mat to turn it into a cozy nest that Lazlo can feel safe in. The easy collapsable design means we even take it with us as we travel, taking his safe space with us wherever we go.

A Sensitive Skin-Safe Collar

While he’s built like a tank on the outside, Lazlo actually has sensitive skin. With other collars we tried, he experienced irritation, redness, and even hair loss on his neck. This Hypoallergenic Hemp Collar is the only one I’ve found that avoids all of those unpleasant symptoms. Super soft, but also sturdy enough to keep my bulldog mix in check, this collar is the best of both worlds!

A Nametag that Doesn’t Dangle

After watching my dog constantly itch at jingly tags hanging from his collar, I decided to give a non-hanging version a go. This customizable, engraved name tag is easy to read, easy to clean, and, best of all, easy to move from collar to harness and back again thanks to the durable, stretchy silicone loops. Even after Lazlo has worn it almost daily for more than a year, the text is still crystal clear and the silicone shows no sign of wear. I’m about to order another to update our address after a move!

A Waterproof AirTag Case

I brought Lazlo home to a big city, so I wanted to be extra careful about safety in case he ever slipped out the door. But also, if I were going to invest in an AirTag, I wanted something that couldn’t easily fall off (or be stolen from) his collar. This Waterproof AirTag Case checked all my boxes. Not only is it going to be able to go with your pet on any adventure you have planned, it attaches to the collar with a pair of screws, making it super secure.

As a side note, having an AirTag on his collar doesn’t just mean I can see where he is at any time, I was also able to teach him a nice little recall trick. Since you can have an AirTag play a sound with a touch of a button on your phone, Lazlo and I played a game where he got a treat if he came and found me after hearing that sound! So now, even when he’s out of sight, I can call him back to me as long as I have my phone on me.

A Hands-Free Leash and A No-Pull Harness

We love Ruffwear, and actually have quite a few of their products, but this everyday Roamer Bungee Hands-Free Leash is what I reach for each time we go for a walk around the neighborhood. I opted for the bungee version for the shock-absorption feature, but we’ve also tried the Crag Hands-Free Leash, and it’s also great!

We also love their padded, no-pull Front Range Harness. Lazlo is small, but he’s very strong, enough so that he would ~literally bruise himself~ pulling on a regular harness. Thanks to the front clip and the padding on this harness, he’s been injury-free ever since!

A Tiny Backpack for Waste Bags, Keys, and More

Not only do I love this Tiny Clip On Backpack that works with almost any dog leash, but I’ve given them out as gifts and my friends love them as well! The front pocket is perfect for dispensing waste bags, and the larger main pocket is big enough to hold keys, a small wallet, earbuds, or any other small supplies you want to bring with you on your adventure.

Leak-Proof Waste Bags

Speaking of waste bags to keep in that front pocket, these Earth Rated Bags are by far my favorites! They are spacious, have never ripped or torn in the four years I’ve been using them, and they come in both scented and non-scented versions. I love that they’re made with 65% post consumer recycled plastic, meaning less plastic in landfills around the world. As an extra perk, they even have stickers letting you know when you’re down to the last three bags in the roll, letting you know it’s time to add another to the pack so you don’t run out mid-walk.

A Backyard Waste Bin

Instead of leaving bags to pile up (or worse, get stuck to the bottom of your trash bin if you throw them in individually) I love this Small, Easy to Clean Trash Can that mounts on the fence of our patio. It’s just the right size to fill up a small trash bag without leaving the contents inside so long that they start to smell. Then you can close up the bag and throw it in with the rest of your garbage! You can even mount it on your trashcan if you want to store it together.
